    Unique opportunity for Africa and development partners to work on NEPAD implementation

    The 9th Africa Partnership Forum (APF) which will meet in Algiers, Algeria from 12-13 November 2007, provides a unique opportunity to engage Africa’s development partners at high policy and strategic level on implementing the AU/NEPAD vision and mission for the accelerated socio-economic transformation of the continent.

    Through the collaboration with the G8/OECD partners Africa has found support for its efforts to meet the challenges of poverty eradication and mainstreaming the continent into the new globalised order.

    Governance and development is the main theme for the 9th APF. Under this theme, two sub-themes will be discussed — “Governance in Development” and “Partnership for Development”.

    The Forum will, therefore, substantively examine two thematic papers:

    Governance in Africa’s development: progress, prospects and challenges and the partnership for development;

    Review of the G8/OECD commitments to Africa since the 2002 G8 Kananaskis Summit.

    Participation in the Forum includes high-level officials from African and G8/OECD governments, members of the NEPAD Steering Committee, the African Union Commission, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and regional/multilateral development institutions, such as the African Development Bank (AfDB), UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the World Bank.

    The APF’s major role is to catalyse action and coordinate support behind African priorities and the NEPAD programme, and it regularly monitors the policy issues, strategies and priorities in support of Africa’s development.

    It thus focuses on strategic, political and socio-economic issues related to African development and the implementation of AU/NEPAD programmes with the overarching objective of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

    The APF was created by the G8 Evian Summit of 2003 in response to the need to strengthen the partnership between Africa and the advanced industrial economies. The first meeting was held in Paris in November 2003 and the APF has since endeavoured to ensure synergies and coherence with the outcomes of other international forums.

    The Forum is convened twice a year, with the venue rotating between Africa and G8/OECD member states. It is supported by the AU/NEPAD Secretariat and the G8/OECD-Support Unit, working through the four co-chairs, two each from Africa and the development partners.

    At the 8th Forum hosted by Germany in Berlin, far-reaching decisions and conclusions were achieved on issues relating to climate change and Africa and the progress being made in the Africa-G8/OECD partnership on investment; peace and security; and gender and economic empowerment in Africa.

    The 9th session in Algiers affords Africa the prospect of showcasing the giant strides made in promoting good governance in Africa. The review of partnership commitments and pledges will also give the participants the opportunity to study better ways and means of strengthening the mechanisms of partnership support between Africa and its development partners, in the spirit of AU/NEPAD.
