NEPAD Food and Nutrition Security Advisor, Boitshepo Bibi Giyose, will be presented in April this year with the annual Distinguished Alumni Award by Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where she graduated with a degree in nutrition and dietetics in 1989.

She later earned a master’s degree in international nutrition at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.

The Distinguished Alumni Awards are given annually to Appalachian alumni who have attained extraordinary distinction and success in their career field and have demonstrated exceptional and sustained leadership.

As Food and Nutrition Security Advisor for the NEPAD, Ms Giyose coordinates nutrition activities and provides policy direction for the African continent. She also works with the United Nations and other organisations.

She has followed an interesting path since graduating. She has been a regional project coordinator for a United Nations initiative to improve the U.N.’s HIV response in small population countries in Africa.

For five years, she was the regional coordinator of the food and nutrition program at the Commonwealth Regional Health Community Secretariat for East, Central and Southern Africa, based in Tanzania.

In 2002, she was nominated as a board member of the Global Alliance to Improve Nutrition, which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Source : NEPAD News, March 9, 2007
