The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is a programme of the African Union aimed at addressing the continent’s socio-economic development. The NEPAD Secretariat is based in Midrand, South Africa.

Chief Executive Officer

The NEPAD Secretariat is looking for an able individual to lead the implementation of the NEPAD programme and the administration of the NEPAD Secretariat. The Chief Executive of the NEPAD Secretariat reports to the Chair of the Heads of State and Government Implementation Committee (HSGIC) for implementation of the programme and the Chair of the African Union for administrative matters.

The major duties and responsibilities are follows: provide strategic leadership of the NEPAD Secretariat as it participates in processes and structures of the AU, the HSGIC, the NEPAD Steering Committee; provide strategic leadership in the implementation of NEPAD; develop, maintain and manage the relations with African partners and our developmental partners; and provide strategic direction in the administration of the NEPAD Secretariat.

The candidate is required to have at least one of the following qualifications:

An advanced (post graduate degree or master’s) university degree in economics, development related studies or relevant discipline; A relevant first level university degree with extensive experience and proven record in national, regional and international development and/or finance institutions may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree; and an advanced executive development programme or related qualification (will be an added advantage).

The candidate is required to have a proven track record of delivery and leading the implementation of large programmes and projects; Substantial and proven experience, including at least 20 years post-qualification experience at very senior level within the public sector or similar institutions, regional organisations/institutions and civil society organisations. At least 10 years of such experience must include appropriate experience in leading and managing comparable public sector institutions or similar organisations nationally, regionally and/or internationally. Experience as an accounting officer will be an added advantage; have substantial experience leading and managing development programmes or projects in Africa with a view to mobilising support and resources for the design initiatives, development of policies, implementation of strategies, and effectively accounting for resources utilised; and have relevant experience in international and regional finance institution and national development institutions.

To apply, candidates should submit their applications using the African Union application format that can be downloaded from www.africa-union.org. In addition, candidates are also required to support their applications with letters of motivation stating reasons for seeking employment with the NEPAD Secretariat. Candidates should submit detailed CV and certified copies of degrees, diplomas, and certificates.
