FIFA World Cup : 20 000 stadium workers to get free tickets

Some 40 000 2010 World Cup South Africa™ tickets will be allocated to construction workers at the stadiums, Fifa president Sepp Blatter announced on Wednesday.

Twenty thousand unsung heroes of the World Cup stadia construction will each be allocated two tickets for matches played at the stadium they are building.

“I have good news for the workers, what we have decided with the Local Organising Committee (together). We will offer to about 20 000 workers, we promised them that everyone will receive two free tickets for the stadium where he is working,” said Blatter.

The gesture, according to Blatter, is a token of appreciation from Fifa and the LOC to all stadium workers.

“This is something we have decided to do and I think it is a merit to the workers and it is in recognition of all those who are helping to bring this World Cup to a success,” Blatter added.

The Fifa president said he was delighted to have met workers in Cape Town and in Johannesburg during his four-day visit in South Africa.

“I met the workers in Cape Town, but I met the workers yesterday (on Tuesday) also in Soccer City, we were singing.

The importance of the workers is to realise that this world cup is tremendous. I told them they are important and that they are building a legacy not only for South Africa but for the whole African continent,” he said.

The 2010 Fifa Football World Cup will be played out in 10 newly built or upgraded stadiums, in nine South African cities.

Five are existing stadiums, which are to be upgraded – with only Soccer City currently undergoing a major upgrade. The remaining five will be built from scratch. All construction work is scheduled for completion by October 2009.

The ten stadiums are:

– Soccer City, Johannesburg
– Ellis Park, Johannesburg
– Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria
– Greenpoint Stadium, Cape Town
– Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban
– Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth
– Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit
– Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane
– Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein
– Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg
