NEPAD Advisor receives US award for distinguished service

    NEPAD Food and Nutrition Security Advisor, Boitshepo Bibi Giyose, was presented with the Distinguised Alumna Award by the Appalachian State University’s Alumni Association at its annual awards banquet in Boone, North Carolina on April 21.


    The award recognises her outstanding accomplishments in the field of international nutrition.

    Giyose, originally from Botswana, graduated from Appalachian in 1989 with a degree in nutrition and dietetics.

    She is on of those rare individuals who know early in life that they want to make a difference in the lives of others.

    “Biotsheopo is the only person I can remember who knew what she wanted to do with her education when she graduated from Appalachian,” says classmate Bradley Hall. “She was very clear on why she was in school. She would obtain her degree in nutrition and return home and help the people of her country overcome nutritional problems that they faced.”

    And she did just that. In her role at NEPAD, she coordinates nutrition activities and provides policy direction for the African continent. She also works with the United Nations and other organisations.

    Giyose has followed an interesting path since graduating from Appalachian. She began her career with the Ministry of Health in Botswana and later attended the graduate school at Cornell University, New York.

    After earning a master’s degree in international nutrition, Giyose returned to Botswana to resume helping malnourished and impoverished people in her country and the region.

    She has been a regional project coordinator for a United Nations initiative to improve HIV response in small population countries in Africa.

    For five years, she was the regional coordinator of the food and nutrition program at the Commonwealth Regional Health Community Secretariat for East, Central and Southern Africa, based in Tanzania.

    In 2002, she was nominated as a board member of the Global Alliance to Improve Nutrition which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

    She has written more than 25 scholarly papers on health and nutrition issues, and has presented papers at high-level forums including the World Food Prize Conference and the USAID-Board for International Food and Agriculture Conference. Source : NEPAD – april 30, 2007
